Finding a Village in Galicia

Galizien German Descendants has a comprehensive collection of information to help you find your Galizien German ancestors in Galicia. We do this because knowing where your ancestor's village was located and what parish it belonged to is important to finding records of your family in Galicia. Be aware that some villages are known to have spelling variants over time so if the spelling doesn't exactly match while using these references, check into names that are close in spelling. GGD has the following resources:

  1. First we have Dave Gorz's Index of German settlements in Galicia. Dave has collected villages from 3 different versions of Rudolph Unterschutz's map (Eastern Galicia and Western Galicia on our website) to create this index. (, 175K, © 2007 David Gorz)

  2. Another very large listing of over 6000 villages in Galicia with their districts and parishes is available at Gesher Galicia, Try the "Find" command on your browser and only search the non-accented characters in your village names. new

  3. Member Oskar Wolf has also created an index for the Unterschutz map which is available at this link(, 1.4MB, © 2001 Oskar Wolf). His index includes the maps themselves as well as the index. Entries for each village include when the village was founded, the primary religion of the inhabitants, the equivalent Ukranian name of the village, what administrative district it was in and the number of inhabitants in 1934. However, it is in German and it is not as complete an index as David created above.

  4.  Gazetteer of the Crownlands and Territories
Represented in the Imperial Council of Austro-Hungary

(Gemeindelexikon der im Reichsrate vertretenen Königreiche und Länder)

A gazetteer is a geographical dictionary of places and where they are located. If you know the name of your ancestral village this gazetteer will assist you to find its location.

This 14 volume gazetteer was published in German between 1903 & 1908 and is available at Mormon Family History Centers for a small fee on microfilm #1187928 but Volume 12 (Galizien) is available online courtesy of the digital library (DigiBib). (NOTE: The server is sometimes busy so errors may be given when trying to view this page. Just try again another time). This gazetteer contains valuable information like population, area, religion, native language, livestock, buildings, etc for most of the villages and towns in the Austro-Hungarian territories of Galizien, Bukowina & Dalmatien.
We have four aids to help you get the most from this gazetteer:
    1. Member Dave Gorz has extracted the alphabetical index of all villages in the book. This index (pages 956 to 1017 in the book) has a list of all villages giving page numbers where village information is found. Note: Page numbers given in these book index pages do not match the page numbers used on the web page. For example this: [bedry#] reference for the village of Bedrykowce in the index gives directs you to book page number 760. To view page 760 in the Gemeindelexikon book you will need to choose page 769 in the "Gehe zu Seite" (Go to page) drop down menu on the Gemeindelexikon web page. (In other words, add 9 to any book page to get the page number to use on the website) For convenience the 62 index pages have been broken into groups of pages of villages with the given first letters. 3. Member Dave Gorz has created a finding aid to complement the information available on HALGAL. It has maps and tables to help you locate the administrative district of your village, an index showing on which pages each district will be found in the gazetteer and and index to the gazetteer's Appendix.
